Stiq Figures, April 23 – 29: Forgotten hero edition

Welcome to Stiq Figures, where the sales data is after the break and the posts don't matter. Every week, we take a look at, uh, something - meanwhile, the previous week's Japanese hardware sales figures are posted after the jump, and a discussion of said figures takes place in our comments. It may not be conventional, but it's a time-honored Joystiq tradition.

There's a lot of noise going on about The Avengers this weekend, what with it having the most successful opening weekend in cinematic history and everything, but we thought we'd take this opportunity to remind everyone about a super hero they were forced to forget: The Sentry.

The Sentry, in his time, was a superhero filled with "the power of one million exploding suns," and was arguably the most powerful living being in the Marvel universe. He was also Reed Richard's best friend, a confidant of the Fantastic Four and mentor to the Hulk. Peter Parker even won a Pulitzer Prize for a photograph he took of The Sentry, though neither Peter, nor Richard, nor any other hero from the Marvel continuum (save for the Hulk) remembered any of this.

The reason being that, in order to defeat The Void, his greatest nemesis that also happened to be a manifestation of his subconscious, The Sentry used his immense powers to erase the memory of his existence from nearly everyone on the planet, including everyone at Marvel Comics, and those who had read about his adventures in the past. The Sentry only resurfaced when a virus in his brain caused him to subconsciously implant memories of his forgotten life into comic book writer Paul Jenkins.

Once released from the debilitating grasp of the virus by Emma Frost, The Sentry became a member of, wouldn't you know it, The Avengers.

The Joystiq Indie Pitch: Here Comes Launchman

Indie developers are the starving artists of the video-game world, often brilliant and innovative, but also misunderstood, underfunded and more prone to writing free-form poetry on their LiveJournals. We believe they deserve a wider audience with the Joystiq Indie Pitch: This week, developers Zach Hinchy and Joe Pierce of The Layabouts describe the beauty in monochromatic simplicity with their PC, Mac and Linux title Here Comes Launchman.

Image

What's your game called and what's it about?

Zach Hinchy: Our game is called Here Comes Launchman. You play as the titular Launchman, an explorer for hire, who has been commissioned to explore the mysterious Puzzle Planet. It's a physics-centric puzzle-platformer with unique gameplay mechanics that allow the player to launch themself through the air like a rocket in any direction and manipulate objects telekinetically.

Describe your experience as a featured indie developer at Minecon 2011: how has it affected your industry perspective, networking abilities or development style?

ZH: Minecon was certainly one hell of an experience. We are admittedly a bit disappointed that Mojang didn't do very much to publicize the Indie Dev Theater and the associated kiosk area. However it was great to get some real in-person feedback about what aspects of the game do and don't work, and it was fantastic to network with awesome indie game people who were there, like Petri Purho and Terry Cavanagh. (Fun side note: Previous Indie Pitch spotlight A Valley Without Wind was the demo kiosk directly facing ours. They were cool guys!)

BlackBerry 10 to get video editor, screen sharing according to forum leak

Image

The Blackberry 10 Dev Alpha we wrapped our mitts around last week didn't tell us much about RIM's big QNX-based OS update (being loaded with PlayBook OS 2.0 and all), but Crackberry forum user Biggulpseh seemingly has the deets that the folks in Waterloo weren't ready to reveal. So-called internal documents reportedly detail a tilt-sensitive lock screen that pushes notifications to the user based on the device's movement (called "cinnamon toast"), a screen-sharing ability to ramp up the productivity of video calls and a robust video editor resulting from RIM's acquisition of JayCut last year. Biggulpseh says the images come from a "trusted source," and are part of a document that outlines upcoming features for the benefit of the firm's employees. Ready to dive in and let your imagination run wild? Hit the source links below, just don't forget your saliferous spices.

How would you change the LG DoublePlay?

Image

It's almost baffling to see a modern Android smartphone with such an archaic design in a world more accustomed to the Galaxy Nexus. Still, LG's late-2011 DoublePlay has a slide-out physical keyboard and that dinky second screen which reminds us of a phone that's years out of date. However, when we reviewed it, we found it to be very useful, even if it lacked a front-facing camera and weighed a metric ton okay, 190 grams. But how about you? Some of you bought this phone, some of you love it, so how has it been? Tell us in the space below.

If The Avengers ever has a video game tie-in, we hope it’s not like this

Image

We're warring with ourselves over the lack of a movie tie-in game for The Avengers, much like Tony Stark and Steve Rogers fight with each other in the beginning of the Avengers initiative, each representing opposing yet valid spectrums of morality, society and technology. And that's the problem - The Avengers movie is so good that we can relate everything in our daily lives back to the most faint of plot points and imagined superhero thought processes. It's also the reason we're disappointed that there's no Avengers video game.

But movie games are always terrible, right? It probably would have been rushed, stilted and dumbed-down for a (much) wider audience.

Actually, Steve, it probably would have been fantastic, as this pre-alpha footage from a canceled THQ game demonstrates.

Well, Tony, that could merely be programmers editing the computer-generated graphics with software and codes to make the game appear better than it actually is.

Steve, stop quoting Bruce. You sound like a man who's been frozen for 70 years. Oh wait.

Shut up. At least the humorous video at the top of this page isn't real.

For once, Cap, we agree on something. And there's always this potential Ubisoft title, Avengers: Battle for Earth. But it's not called Avengers: Iron Man is Obviously the Best, so I'm ignoring that one too. Cheers.

...Cheers.
