Nikon D3100 SLR, Coolpix S1100pj and S5100 compacts leaked in German magazine

We’ve definitely seen new Nikon gear leak in the foreign press before, and it looks like the cycle continues: that rumored Nikon D3100 SLR just made an appearance in the pages of Germany’s Foto Digital magazine, along with an updated Coolpx S1100pj projector-cam and a new Coolpix S5100. The D3100 is obviously the main attraction — it has a 14 megapixel sensor with up to ISO 12800 sensitivity, a new 1080p video mode, and an improved processor and autofocus system, for a body-only price of €650 ($831). Not bad — although we don’t know if it has that rumored continuous autofocus mode for video yet. We don’t know nearly as much about the new Coolpix S1100pj, except that it’ll retain the projector from the S1000pj, come in colors and add a touchscreen and remote control the mix; the Coolpix S5100 is less of a mystery, with a 12 megapixel sensor and a 28-140mm zoom lens pegged in the magazine. Of course, none of this is officially official yet, but we’d imagine we’ll be hearing more real soon — stay tuned.

Google calls Oracle Android lawsuit ‘baseless,’ says Java goes ‘beyond any one corporation’

Oracle’s decision to sue Google for infringing its patents and copyright on Java in Android has certainly stirred up a hornets’ nest of commentary and analysis on the web today, but it’s only just now that we’ve received Google’s official statement, in which the search giant calls the suit “baseless” and vows to “defend open-source standards.” Them’s fightin’ words — and considering the Dalvik virtual machine at the heart of the Android OS is the centerpiece of this dispute, we wouldn’t expect either side to back down quietly here. Get ready for years of litigation, friends. Here’s Google’s full statement:
We are disappointed Oracle has chosen to attack both Google and the open-source Java community with this baseless lawsuit. The open-source Java community goes beyond any one corporation and works every day to make the web a better place. We will strongly defend open-source standards and will continue to work with the industry to develop the Android platform.

Droid 2 review

Even by mid-2010 standards, Verizon’s original Droid still looks and feels thoroughly modern — after all, it set a pretty high benchmark for the upper end of Android’s product portfolio when it launched late last year, and Motorola has managed to keep it updated through two major revisions of the platform along the way (in fact, it’s still just one of a very few devices running Froyo commercially at this point). That said, it’s got a handful of minor design flaws, none of which are really showstoppers in and of themselves but add up to make the phone a little less enjoyable to use than it could’ve been.
That’s where the Droid 2 comes in: a phone that’s less of an all-new, blockbuster product like the Droid X or EVO 4G and more of a genuine “version 2.0″ type of effort — hence the name, we suppose — targeting some specific pain points we all experienced with the first-generation device. And just because it doesn’t have the beastly, in-your-face appeal of the Droid X doesn’t mean Verizon isn’t considering it an important device; quite the contrary, actually, rolling out a big new ad campaign and making it the first Droid model to be offered in an official R2-D2 version (and let’s be real: you can never downplay the significance of a gadget with a good Star Wars angle).
To put it plainly: on the heels of the Droid, the Droid 2′s got some big shoes to fill. Let’s find out whether they’ve pulled it off.

Sony Reader PRS-350 and PRS-650 rumored for release, 3G teased for the latter

It’s about that time, folks. And by “about that time,” we mean “time for Sony to release another round of Readers.” If you’ll recall, the outfit dumped a few on us last year right around this time, and the sleuths over at Sony Insider have dug up information that they purport to be true about Sony’s next Reader duo. Reportedly, the outfit is gearing up to reveal the PRS-350 and PRS-650, each of which will boast E Ink displays and be thinner / more longevous compared to the existing PRS-600 and PRS-300. It’s bruited that they’ll be under 10mm thick, while the 650 will boast a 6-inch display and the 350 a 5-inch panel. We should also see a bump from 512MB to 2GB in terms of internal storage space (at least on the 650), and we wouldn’t be shocked to find both 3G and WiFi support on the higher end of the two. As for software? We’re told that the Reader UI will be refaced somewhat, and the note-taking program in the PRS-600 will find its way onto the lower-end PRS-350. Mum’s the word on pricing, but it shouldn’t be too long before all that gets cleared up — think it over good, Sony. We’ve got options, you know.

RIM reportedly working with India to avoid BlackBerry ban

There were reports as late as this morning that RIM was remaining “defiant” over the looming (and recurring) BlackBerry ban in India and not willing to cut any “special deals,” but it looks like that may not be the case after all — Reuters is reporting that RIM has assured India that it will provide a “technical solution” sometime next week. That’s presumably similar to the arrangement RIM recently worked out with Saudi Arabia, but India still isn’t making any final decisions just yet, with a government source simply saying that its “technical team will evaluate if it works.” Somewhat curiously, the source also mentioned that India had “concerns” about Gmail and Skype, but didn’t offer any further details.
For its part, RIM has issued a customer update that outlines the four main principles that govern the capabilities it provides to carriers for “lawful access purposes.” Head on past the break for the complete statement.

tPhone competes with Apple Peel 520, turns your iPod Touch into a chubby phone

Well, it didn’t take long for the Apple Peel 520 to go from pioneering phone-maker to competition. Enter the tPhone, an also derivatively named and similarly positioned device that attaches to an iPod Touch and turns it into a phone. This one packs a 1,200mAh battery, 50 percent larger than the Apple Peel, but offsets that by existing as a “super-duper thick” hard case that clips on to the Touch. It naturally also offers a SIM slot and a dock port, augmented by a handy microUSB port on the side. It’ll set you back ¥700, about $100, so you’re paying a bit of a premium over the $75 Apple Peel. Worth it given the extra bulk and cost? That depends: just how big are your pockets?
