Sony says the Reader is selling ‘very well,’ thank you very much, isn’t planning color versions
Posted by Jeff | Filed under General Babble
With all this talk of iPads and Kindles shaking up the print world, few people are sparing a thought for Sony’s noble Reader series, so the company would like to take this opportunity to remind you that it is “selling very well.” Fujio Noguchi, Deputy President of Sony’s e-book division, indicated that the gadget is its most popular item in the Sony Style store, with the Touch Edition selling the most units. He says that his focus is on “readability” and that the company will continue to use e-paper, good news for those with sensitive eyes, but that Sony has no plans for a color Reader until color e-ink screens are of sufficient quality. So, for now, you’ll just have to buy yourself the one on the left above if you’re looking to tickle your cones.

Steve Jobs compares iPad battery life to Kindle’s: ‘You’re not going to read for 10 hours’ (video)
Posted by Jeff | Filed under General Babble
Hey, remember back when Steve Jobs said “people don’t read anymore” when discussing why the Kindle would be a failure? Heh, funny story: turns out Apple just released a device called the iPad and, at its unveiling, spent an awful lot of time showing off what a great reader it is. However, when comparing it to Kindle (as we did here) you have to think about that battery life figure: 10 hours vs. seven days. When Walt Mossberg caught Jobs after the unveiling for a little gonzo-style interview he asked about this, and Jobs said “you’re not going to read for 10 hours…you just end up pluggin’ it in.” So, Steve now concedes that people do read, but apparently they don’t do it for long without coming close to a power receptacle. When asked about price differentials between books on the devices, rumored to be as much as $5 more than on Kindle, Jobs somewhat reluctantly states that “publishers are actually withholding books from Amazon because they’re not happy,” and that “the prices will be the same” — but doesn’t indicate whether Amazon’s prices will be going up or that rumored $14.99 price point is going down. It’s all in the video after the break, including plenty of face time with Walt.

Giroux Daguerreotype is world’s first mass-produced camera, about to become the most expensive one too
Posted by Jeff | Filed under General Babble
If you thought that shooters like Olympus’ E-P1 or Leica’s M8 had old school aesthetics, think again. The real old school — we’re talking 1839 here — was all about wooden boxes and brass lens protrusions, as you can see above. The double box design of the Daguerreotype lets you achieve focus by moving the smaller inner box away from the front-mounted 15-inch lens. Exposure times can take up to half an hour, though, so you might wanna budget for a sturdy tripod as well. Speaking of budget, if you know the meaning of the word you’re not probably not the target audience here, as a May auction in Vienna is set to start at €200,000 ($280,000), with predictions placing the final sale price closer to €700,000 ($980,000).

Broadcom co-founder cleared of drug-related charges, party at Henry T. Nicholas III’s place!
Posted by Jeff | Filed under General Babble
Usually when a judge says that you have had “a serious drug problem,” you’re in trouble. When he does so in a court of law in which you’ve been accused of drug-related debauchery… well, surely nothing good can happen. Yet somehow, thanks to the luck of the filthy rich, Henry T Nicholas III, co-founder of Broadcom, has managed to escape the crazy allegations of wild, drug-filled parties, of spiking executives’ drinks with MDMA, and of once smoking so much marijuana on a private airplane that the pilot had to don a gas mask. That said, our visions of wild telecom nights and coke-riddled days aren’t necessarily false: the case is being thrown out thanks to improper conduct on behalf of the prosecution, who apparently not only used improper means to influence witnesses but was also responsible for leaking information to the press. (Oops.) Nicholas indicates he’s now planning on doing some charity work, but he shouldn’t party away his legal fund just yet — this has appeal written all over it.

AMD and Intel’s six-core CPU plans revealed by mobo makers
Posted by Jeff | Filed under General Babble
You have to love DigiTimes and those loquacious sources it seems to keep finding. The latest word from the Taiwanese grapevine suggests that both Intel and AMD will be bringing out six-core CPUs to the consumer market by the middle of this year. We’re using the term “consumer” rather loosely here as Intel’s first Gulftown chip is expected to be priced north of $1,000. The Core i7-980X is slated for a March release, which just fits inside the Q1 window that earlier rumors had suggested. If you butter your bread on the AMD side, you’ll have to wait a while longer as those 45nm Thuban chips — herafter to be known as the Phenom II X6 1000T series — won’t be landing until at least May. The usual caution when dealing with anonymous sources is advisable, but this sounds like a roadmap with a high likelihood of being accurate.

Michael Dell pulls Mini 5 Android tablet from his parka, offers to put one in yours in ‘a couple of months’ (video)
Posted by Jeff | Filed under General Babble
Hot on the heels of us thinking maybe the Dell Streak / Mini 5 was possibly due for a name change to the “M01M,” a roving heckler from TechCrunch managed to catch the man himself, Michael Dell, on the street and get a quick demonstration of the thing — which he with no uncertain terms referred to as the “Mini 5.” He swiped through a number of home screens and quickly showed the five megapixel camera on the back, mentioned 3G wireless, and then tucked it away again. No price was given, but the biggest news is confirmation that it’s coming out in “a couple of months,” which is something of a surprise given the company was still calling it a concept just a few weeks ago. Video of this choice encounter is after the break.
[Thanks, Mark O.]

Toshiba TG02 lives, drops by the FCC
Posted by Jeff | Filed under General Babble
Before the Nexus One and the HD2, there was the Toshiba TG01, sprinting along with a 1GHz Snapdragon in its belly and a 4.1-inch front end. Alas, that phone was hamstrung by a resistive touchscreen and a poorly thought-out skin atop an even worse OS (WinMo 6.1), but even by today’s standards its hardware spec is top notch. Color us intrigued, then, to find its successor finally making its FCC debut — with Bluetooth, GPS and WiFi (802.11b/g) connectivity in tow and a case outline suggesting some earlier leaked shots might still be accurate. It’s a quad-band GSM handset, though from the tests we’ve seen it appears to sadly lack 3G frequencies for the US. The marketing name has also been confirmed as the TG02 and with MWC 2010 fast approaching, who’s to say we’re not going to have a brand new Toshiba handset to fawn over? Go past the break for more.

Tengu Black ready to rock your world
Posted by Jeff | Filed under General Babble
Did you know that some pseudo-scientists pinpointed January 18 as this year’s most depressing day? As we gaze out from the Engadget mansions at the leafless trees and listless mood outside, we can’t help but agree that January’s a bit of a downer. So to pep yourself up geeky style, why not grab an all-new Tengu Black? It seems a faithful reproduction (i.e. identical but for the color) of the white Tengu, a USB plug-in device that listens to your music and tries to lip sync to it with its LED array contorting into “over 14 different facial expressions.” Let’s face it, with the Robot Apocalypse all but assured, we should be practicing our love of inanimate objects as much as possible. A video reminder of how the older Tengu does its thing awaits after the break.
